I've been wanting to read this book since a long time ago. One day I was just with my mom at the mall and I saw a copy, I couldn't resist books calling to me. (Bookworm alert.) So I finally bought it.
The moment I went home and opened it, I couldn't stop my reading. It was that good!
I finished this book in only a few hours, tops. Because... well... I told you I couldn't put it down after starting a few pages.
I actually started reading an e book of this a long time ago but I found it boring so I stopped reading but it's really different once you have a physical copy, well, you could say it's not boring anymore.
First: SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT
Okay you've been warned.
I liked Pudge and Colonel's friendship. Colonel really did teach Miles a few things or two. Some might call it bad influence but I beg to differ.
I also heard that this book received a lot of controversial criticism because of it's pornographic parts but I think hence that part, it's a really really good book once you look past it.
Some might be reminded of their high school days, because of all the sneaking out and drinking and smoking. But for myself, since I am living in Philippines, and am studying in a private school, the typical drinking, smoking, and partying isn't really a 'thing' or hype. Though I know a few who drinks, they're very limited and I can count them with my hands. So, I can say I don't relate well with their so called 'activities'.
Maybe that's what I like about reading books that was written outside my country as well, it educates me of the happenings or what really goes on in the states. Like, their education, the way of living, jobs, or etc.
Before:
I really ship Alaska and Pudge, they sound cute together while I was reading and up to the end part I was actually hoping for an HEA but none of that for me.
I guess I've read a lot of those kind of books this days, ones without HEA, but I could honestly say that it broadens my horizons when it comes to fictional books. In the past few years since I've started being into books, at age 10, I first read the Twilight series, right after I saw the first movie. That one had HEA, so it kinda fell into pattern that I was into books about immortality and stuff like that.
Then I started reading the Evermore series, about immortals. Which I haven't finished yet...
But anyways, back to the subject, the After part, when Alaska died, I find it really weird that for smart people like Chip and Pudge, they couldn't guess her cause of death. And she's their friend!
My guess is that, that night, it was Alaska's death anniversary or something and she got really drunk right? And she really misses her mom terribly and she made a few jokes about killing herself once or twice, and she didn't even swerve when she saw the car on the road, she might have killed herself in thoughts on being her mother again.
I also think that she should've broken up with her boyfriend long time ago for Pudge because he seems so sweet and he likes Alaska too. And even though he didn't even get laid, I think life's unfortunate for him to have something happen he wanted for a long time only for Alaska to kill herself few hours after. But I guess some people had it worse.
I was depressed for a week straight after reading this okay.
All I can say now is that this is definitely on my favorite books. I have yet to read other John Green books like The Fault in Our Stars. I've heard comments about it on how good it was and Tumblr people are forcing me to read it as well. So, I might buy it the next time!
I also just finished reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, might do a review soon! See you there!
Thanks for reading! Hoped you enjoyed my super boring first ever book review.
(Hihi, I like taking pictures of quotes from books that I really like.)
